SHUM is a team of new media artists working internationally with physical art objects, installations and digital content.

Born out of a decade-long friendship, Andrey Gorlachev (b. 1994, new media artist) and Alexander Zhiganov (b. 1998, creative producer) initiated the team's journey in January 2023, and together with 11 like-minded creators, they form the core of SHUM.

AV PERFORMANCE 2025

Light is fundamental to life on the Earth and shapes the modes of existence of both natural and technological systems. In our AV performance, we explore two perspectives on its perception — human and machine. For humans, light — primarily sunlight — is an essential condition of life. Without it, existence becomes vulnerable and natural rhythms are disrupted. Artificial intelligence, by contrast, functions more effectively in environments with lower temperatures, closer to arctic conditions, where the stability of computational systems is easier to maintain.

Reflections on the role of light, gathered through a dialogue between a human and an AI, form the conceptual foundation of the project. These texts were transformed into vocal fragments and integrated into the sound design. We can translate them to any language needed. The musical layer also embodies duality: electronic structures blend with live instruments, creating a hybrid sonic palette that mirrors the interplay between the organic and the artificial.
