SHUM is a team of new media artists working internationally with physical art objects, installations and digital content.

Born out of a decade-long friendship, Andrey Gorlachev (b. 1994, new media artist) and Alexander Zhiganov (b. 1998, creative producer) initiated the team's journey in January 2023, and together with 11 like-minded creators, they form the core of SHUM.

NEUTRINO
INTERACTIVE INSTALLATION 2024


The interactive installation transforms a spherical space into a laboratory where each participant can experience being a scientist searching for unique elementary particles.

Neutrinos are the theme of our research and installation, they are extremely small elementary particles. Like ghosts, they pass through people and the Earth itself in hundreds of trillions every day, almost without interacting with matter. This makes them very difficult to catch and study.

The story of neutrino detection feels deeply romantic. A complex scientific process inspired us to draw a parallel with a simple childhood game — catching reflections of sunlight.
The tent provided by the festival organizers was transformed into an interactive, gamified neutrino laboratory.
Inside, visitors encountered the central object of the installation — a cube covered with detectors.
The space was also equipped with a surround sound system. SHUM created original music and sound design specially for this environment.
Laser beams surround the cube and flash chaotically, but none of them hit it directly.  
Each visitor receives a small round mirror and uses it to reflect a laser beam — like catching a sun reflection — directing it into one of the cube’s detectors.
When the reflected beam reaches a detector, the cube lights up from within, and the entire space transforms. Sound reacts as well, marking the moment of discovery.
